The Differences between LCD and DLP Projector

When shopping for projectors, you'll likely be choosing between the two most common projection technologies: DLP and LCD. Below, we'll compare projectors of both types, explaining each technology and the advantages of both home theater projectors. You can then decide which projector is best for your entertainment system.

DLP projectors

DLP technology was invented by Dr. Larry Hornbeck of Texas Instruments in 1987 year, but spreading widely into projector market began years later, and DLP structure projectors still owns only ~50% of projector market in the world. DLP Compact Projector have a DMD chip and the light is passed through it. On this chip there are composed thousands of micro mirrors, each of them represent a single pixel. These mirrors can be turned off or on, so the light is reflected or deflected. Thats why DLP projectors usually has so high contrast ratio. To add colors to the image DLP projectors have integrated color wheel. New models have at least 6 colors on color wheel. Image and video quality highly depends on color wheel speed, which should be 4x for great video quality, 2x speed is not recommended as it is high possibility of rainbow effect appearance. Here we can recommend you Jimilab DLP mini projector.

DLP Benefits:
☆ Produces a smooth, crystal-clear image ☆ Capable of projecting ultra-fast (16 microsecond pixel response time - about 1,000 times faster than LCD projectors), smooth, jitter-free image ☆ Saller and lighter design profile ☆ Image pixilation is less visible than on LCD projections ☆ Filter-free design provides for virtually zero maintenance ☆ Saves significant maintenance dollars and labor over the projector's lifespan, and lowers the total cost of ownership (TCO)
DLP Limitations: ☆ Requires more lumens than LCD in areas with ambient light ☆ Longer throw distance than LCD ☆ DLP color wheel may create “rainbow effect” on projected images ☆ Spinning color wheel and exhaust fans produce noise
LCD projectors

LCD technology is older compared to DLP. Our days most of LCD projector manufacturers use 3LCD technology, which was invented 1988 by Epson and still owns almost half of projector market in the world. In LCD pocket LED projector the light is passed through 3 seperate LCD panels which represent three colors: red, green and blue (that is why this technology also is called 3LCD). When light is passedthrough the LCD panels, individual pixels are turned on or off to allow light through or stop it. The separate colours are then converged and projected on the projection screen.

LCD Benefits:

☆  Delivers stronger brightness in its three basic colors
☆  Zoom lens offers more flexible mounting options
☆  Produces less noise than DLP projectors
☆  Richer colors provide better results in spaces with high ambient light
☆  Utilizes less power and outputs less heat
☆  No “rainbow effect” on projected images

LCD Limitations:

☆  Requires constant filter cleaning and replacement
☆  Image pixilation is more visible when compared to DLP
☆  Larger, heavier design profile
☆  Black tones may appear more gray, resulting in lesser contrast
☆  May have color decay after extended use Conclusion

Both DLP and LCD projector technologies offer key advantages over the other, but each may be better suited to different applications.

For example, DLP projectors are more portable than LCD projectors; therefore DLP tends to be favored by presenters on the road (e.g.android mini projector). Because of DLP’s higher color saturation, better contrast, and image stability, it has become a popular choice for home theater usage. On the other hand, the three basic colors generated from LCD projectors are generally more accurate than DLP projectors. Neither technology is better than the other—each has its own distinct advantages, as well as some drawbacks.
